Help us

If you have any news which you would like to be published on the Lavey website or in the club notes, please do hesitate to get in touch by email (edellehenry@gmail.com).

Unfortunately, due to other commitments and the vast number of activities which take place throughout the year, it is impossible to get around every team. We would therefore particularly urge underage parents and managers to email through match results, match reports and fixtures, and we will do our best to get the information uploaded. Photographs are also welcome!

Also…add us on facebook for regular updates!!! (Lavey Termoneeny Centre)

AGM

08 Jan 2012

crest

The annual AGM was held at the Lavey Termoneeny Centre on Sunday 8th January. Sean McPeake and Eileen Downey started proceedings by giving a brief account of activities over the past year, both on and off the pitch, before Martin Convery presented a detailed breakdown of the yearly accounts. The club committee, members and community must be highly commended for the healthy financial state of club affairs, particularly in the current economic climate. All debt arising from the recent £2.4M project has now been cleared. Much of this is owed to the huge fundraising efforts made over the past year, as well as the success of the ongoing ‘Club Lavey’, including the monthly draw. However Martin finished with a word of caution; the club cannot afford to rest on its laurels, but must strive ‘onwards and upwards’ into the future.

Election of new club delegates is as follows;

Presidents: Tommy Doherty, Colm Mulholland, Fr Baker, Pat McCloy, Fr O’Donnell.
Chairman: Seamus Downey
Vice Chair: Paul Birt
Secretary: Sean McPeake
Ass. Secretary: Shauna McCrystal
Treasurer: Martin Convery
Ass. Treasurer: Gerard Hasson
PRO: Edelle Henry and Joe McGurk
Registrar: Mervin McMullan
Insurance Officer: Paddy Dillon
Scor Officier: Caoimhe O’Neill
Hurling Co-ordinator: Joe McGurk
Football Co-ordinator: Seamus Downey
Camogie Co-ordinator: Eileen Downey

We wish the new committee continued success for the year 2012.

U16 Fooball Final

25 Aug 2011

U16 Football Final

Congratulations to the U16 Footballers who won the Championship!! Lavey 0-16 – Swatragh 0-06!! Well done lads!

See Match Report Below:
Lavey win U-16 Football Championship

Congratulations to the u-16 footballers who won the football championship at the hands of Swatragh on Thursday night!

Lavey dominated the game from the throw in with Jarlath Shaw opening the score book before Swatragh levelled with a point against the run of play. Lavey immediately answered this score by driving down the pitch at pace, and after some beautiful exchange play by Shea Downey and Connor McGurk, Declan Hughes finished the ball to the back of the net to make the score 1-1 to 0-1. Swatragh responded with a point, before Connor McGurk and Jarlath Shaw (free) added to the Lavey tally. This was to be Lavey’s last score of the half with Swatragh enjoying a period of dominance for the last 15 minutes. The Swatragh midfield and forwards put the Lavey defenders under severe pressure, however excellent defending by Eamon Magill, Connor Mulholland and Aidan Toner limited them to a point from an excellently taken 45’ during this period. The score at half time read Lavey 1-3, Swatragh 0-4.

Whatever Johnny McGarvey, Seamus Downey and Conall Halferty said at half time, it certainly worked! Lavey came out much stronger in the second half and completely dominated from the throw in. Niall Toner introduced himself to the game with a well taken point from his first touch of the ball, with Eunan Shaw adding to the score sheet with a point from the left boot. Jarlath Shaw added another point before finally Swatragh opened their second half tally with a point from a 30 yard free.

A dangerous ball into the Swatragh forwards was beautifully read and intercepted by Brendan Laverty, who delivered a perfect pass to Niall Toner, who was then fouled on the 45’. Toner opted for a quick free to Jarlath Shaw, who slotted the ball over the bar from the left wing. Declan Hughes added another point after a great catch when Shaws’ 45’ dropped short, to bring the score line to 1-8 to 0-5.

Swatragh piled on the pressure again, however ferocious tacking by the half back line of Kevin Toner, Anthony Magill and Brendan Laverty, who in particular had an excellent second half performance, cut out the attack once more. At the other end, Conor McGurk added two further points to his tally, one from a free.

At this point, the Hughes’ brothers took over scoring a series of five points between them, (Declan 0-3 and Paul 0-2), both of them unlucky to have goal chances knocked over the crossbar by the alert Swatragh keeper. Swatragh orchestrated one last attack, however Jamie O’Kane pulled off a great save, and Swatragh could only manage a point from the rebound before the referee brought proceedings to end with a final score of Lavey 1-15, Swatragh 0-7.

Congratulations to the full squad and management on a terrific win! Onwards and upwards!

Lavey Team and Scorers:

U16 Footballers win Club Derry Tournament

14 Apr 2011

U16 Footballers

Congratulations to the U16 Footballers who won the Club Derry Tournament in Owenbeg.
The team won a set of Club Derry Jersies and were captained by Declan Hughes.

In the B section the following teams made it through to the knock out stages after some pulsating games in the group stages : Sean Dolans, Foreglen, Lavey, Greenlough, Claudy, Ogramore, Slaughtmanus, Coleraine and Doire Trasna.

Sean Dolans and Foreglen had to play in a preliminary round to get into the quarter finals with Foreglen coming out on top with a comfortable 12 points to spare. The quarter finals threw up some interesting ties:

Foreglen 3-08 vs Ogramore 2-04

Lavey 4-05 vs Slaughtmanus 2-03

Greenlough 3-11 vs Coleraine 2-00

Claudy 0-13 vs Doire Trasna 0-11

Foreglen played Lavey in the semi final, the extra game appeared to show on the young Foreglen players legs with Lavey showing more energy to get over the line and book their place in the final. In the other semi final Greenlough put Claudy to the sword to set up what was to be a very close final.

To decide who would be crowned the Under 16 Football 7’s B champions both Greenlough and Lavey knew they would both have to be at the top of their game. As the game progressed it became increasingly difficult to separate the teams, Greenlough appearing to hold a slight advantage for much of the game, just managing to keep their noses in front. But the fitness and athleticism of the Lavey men came through in the end, they managed to hit a very well worked goal with two minutes to go to put them level followed by some very intelligent football to knock on two extra points which was the winning margin when referee Mervin McAleese blew for full time. Lavey won on a score line of 3-06 to 2-07.

Congratulations

Lavey defeat the Loup in first round of League

28 Mar 2011

Lavey claim first 2 points of the season

*Senior Football League 1st Round *

Sunday 27th March saw Lavey get there League campaign off to a winning start with a victory over Loup. It was the Loup who got off to the better start, clocking up 3 unanswered points before Ben Dodds had the foresight to spot Paul Hearty on the move for him to hid low to the left corner of the net. Lavey quickly capitalised on this and registered points from the boot of Caolean O’Boyle, Paul Hearty and Shane Devlin. At half time the score line was Lavey 1-07 to Loup 0-08. The second half began much the same as the first with Loup looking the sharper of the two teams. Lavey quickly got to grips with the game and points from Shane Devlin and Caolean O’Boyle saw them begin to pull level with Loup and when a penalty was awarded O’Boyle had no hesitation in stepping up to hit low to the corner of the net. A final point from Colm Dillon sealed Lavey’s victory before the final whistle. Final Score Lavey 2-10 Loup 0-13.

In the semi-finals Lavey proved too strong for Swatragh whilst Na Magha defeated Banagher. The final again was an excellent game of hurling with Lavey coming out on top against Na Magha on a score line of 4 – 5 to 1 – 5. Overall Lavey were deserving winners, they combined strong running and economical use of the ball throughout the day which other teams could not match. The winning team got a set of Club Derry jerseys as the prize for the winning the competition. Congratulations to Lavey and well done to all the clubs who took part.

In Memory of Davey Guess

In Memory of Davey Guess

On the 6th of January 2010, Lavey Parish and Community lost a dear friend. David Francis Guess, son of the late David and Mary Guess died age 74. David or (Davey) as he was known to friends passed away in Belfast City Hospital.

As a long standing member of the Lavey community Davey was someone who was an intricate part of that ethos of community. He was familiar to everyone in Lavey and anyone who was new to the parish would soon get to know him. He was an esteemed clubman of Erin’s Own GAC, Lavey.

A reserved person who was irreplaceable around the club, he will be sadly missed in Lavey. Lavey GAC Committee and members offer sympathy to his sorrowing relatives and friends. He will remain forever in our memories.

A Gaelic Farewell
May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face.
May the rain fall softly upon your fields until we meet again,
And may God hold you in the hollow of his hand.

Lavey GAC provides shelter to those rescued from adverse weather conditions on the Glenshane Pass

Following the Glenshane Pass closure due to extreme snow last night, (Tue 30th Mar 2010) in which 300 people were trapped, Lavey GAC/Termoneeny Community Centre provided food and shelter to some of those snow victims.

The police and mountain rescue squads contacted Sean McPeake local councillor, DPP member and Lavey GAC Club member in order to arrange facilities to accommodate those victims of the snow. Lavey Club and the Termoneeny Association quickly assembled their committee members and made preparations to act as a support facility. Volunteers from club and local community arranged blankets, bedding and food in an attempt to provide some comfort. Local businesses FP McCann, Gilbert Crawford, McKee’s butchers, Kelly’s Spar and others all assisted with the supply of people and materials to cater for nearly 200 people.

Those who fell victim to ‘the Pass’ were thankful for the efforts of the members of the club and community organisation. Some even used the Indoor Sports facility on Wednesday andplayed a multi-national football match whilst waiting on the Glenshane road being cleared. The return leg is reputed to be fixed for Wednesday fortnight at the top of “the Pass”!
Meanwhile, Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness and Foyle MLA Martina Anderson visited the club during the relief efforts on Wednesday.

Mary McAleese visits Lavey

Mary McAleese meets the people of Lavey

President Mc Aleese visits Lavey GAC

``Having travelled the world for the last 12 years as president, I am not easily astonished, but coming in here today to a small rural community I was truly astonished by the scale of the achievements here…it is a huge credit to all involved in the project.” These were the words of President Mary Mc Aleese on her visit to Lavey GAC/Termoneeney Community facility on Saturday 27th March.
A large crowd of well wishers were present to greet the president on her arrival to Gulladuff at 12.45pm. President Mc Aleese and her husband Martin were welcomed to Lavey by Club Chairman Seamus Downey and introduced to Seán McPeake, club Secretary and Chairman of Magherafelt District Council, Paul Birt Chairman of Lavey GAC and Termoneeney Community Association and Elaine Mc Crystal chairperson of Termoneeney Community Association. In brilliant sunshine the president posed outside for group photographs of both Lavey and Termoneeney committees. The president was also greeted by Lavey`s former Derry 1958 All-Ireland final players Tommy Doherty and Colm Mulholland.

The president then entered the building where she was signed the visitors book before going on a tour of the new £2.5m sports and community facility. On entering the gymnasium she met with Lavey sports development officer Tommy Stevenson. Tommy briefed the President on the all-inclusive nature of the gymnasium which was only one of four gymnasiums in the north of Ireland which catered for both able-bodied and people with disabilities alike. After leaving the gymnasium the President entered the sports hall where she saw underage games of football, hurling and camogie being played simultaneously on the artificial Third Generation surface. The president then entered the main hall where she was welcomed to an immaculately presented stage by Feár an Ti Joe Mc Gurk. The clubrooms were now full to capacity of the young and not so young. Joe introduced the president on stage to the eagerly assembled audience where she was entertained with some traditional music from Termoneeney music group. After shaking hands and thanking the children the President began to address the audience. After an introduction and thank you `As Gaeilge` the president spoke of her astonishment at what has been achieved in Lavey. She spoke of the huge amount of work and dedication that must have been required in order that a facility such as this could be delivered. She praised the foresight, efforts and sacrifices that were made by this rural community in order that this tremendous success story was achieved. What she saw, she said, was a very strong statement of intent coming from this rural parish. A statement which was full of confidence in ourselves, a statement which also said that whatever obstacles were placed in front of yourselves that they were not going to be insurmountable. She quipped at her husband Martin`s playing days with Anthony Mc Gurk on the Sigerson Cup winning team and also of how Martin was of late getting a new lease of life with the success of Antrim`s County football team!
Chairperson of Lavey/TCG joint committee Paul Birt then addressed the audience. Paul went into some detail around the building project and how it had been successfully delivered. He thanked the president for taking time out of her busy schedule to be with us in Lavey. The president was presented with a flower arrangement in Lavey and Termoneeney colours from Termoneeney Chairperson Elaine Mc Crystal. Club Chairperson Seamus Downey also presented the president with a copy of Lavey GAC club history book.
The president then left the stage and onto the main body of the hall where she had earlier said she and her husband wanted to meet and talk to as many people as she could, and they certainly did! One of the first up to meet her was the president`s own first cousin now living in Lavey, Damian Treanor. After exchanging pleasantries the president then met with Jonathan Boyle an ex-pat now living in England but had made the journey across the sea back to Lavey especially to meet with the president. Rosemary Shivers, Kathleen Regan, Brian Boyle, the Downey and Doole families were among others who also had conversations with the president. The president then was introduced to the youngest Lavey person in the audience that day, 11 day old Karen Birt who was photographed with the president and proud parents. The many children who had just less than two hours previously had received the sacrament of confirmation in Lavey were now also swelling the numbers eagerly wanting to get photographed and to meet the president. Dressed in their finest many young children with their parents were now getting that special photograph for their album. As the advancing crowds got larger the president continued to press the flesh and meet with the dozens of well wishers before making her way eventually towards the exit door.
Club chairman Seamus Downey was on hand to say goodbye and to thank the President and her husband Martin for making the event possible. The assembled crowds broke into rapturous applause as the President and her husband got into their car to make the journey back to Aras an Uachtarainn. As the president’s car with their entourage of security vehicles rolled out of the club grounds it had signalled an end of what had been a hugely successful and historic day in the history of Lavey.
